About

All you need to know about the Bible in a Year Adventure

This site helps you to follow the One Year Bible Plan at St James Gerrards Cross and Fulmer.

What?

In 2010 we’re encouraging members of St James to take on the challenge of reading the whole Bible in a year.

Why?

Reading God’s word regularly and prayerfully is a life transforming experience. Reading the whole Bible in a year has a number of benefits:

  • It helps establish a habit of daily Bible reading
  • It gives you a feel for the Bible’s overarching story
  • It is something we can do together as a community activity

Who?

Anyone who wants to can join in. You can take part as an individual, as a couple, as a family, as a small group, with anyone you want.

When and Where?

It will take from as little as 15 minutes a day beginning on 1st January 2010. You choose a time and place that suits you best to read the passages for the day on your own, or with someone else. Don’t worry if you miss some days. If you don’t think you’re going to be able to catch up, then jump back in at today’s passages and save those you’ve missed for next year.

How?

We’ll be following the reading plan used in Tyndale House Publishers’ One Year® Bible. Each day there is an OT reading, a NT reading, a reading from the Psalms and a reading from Proverbs. Here are some ways you can use the plan:

  • Use the plan with your own Bible. You can find it online at: www.oneyearbibleonline.com/readingplan/oneyearbiblereadingplan.pdf – or pick up a paper copy at the Saint James Centre Welcome Desk.
  • Buy a One Year® Bible with the passages grouped together for each day of the year. Tyndale publish a number of different editions – choose between NLT and NIV translations, paperback or hardback, regular or compact size. (N.B. we’re using the non-chronological version). The Saint James Centre bookstall will carry a small number in stock or you can order one.
  • To read the day’s passages online, come back to this website – www.saintjamesbibleinayear.org.uk – where you will also find thoughts on the upcoming week’s readings from James Leach and others and where you can add your own comments.
  • If you have an iPhone, listen to the day’s readings using the One Year Audio Bible iPhone app – you’ll find it in the iTunes store (£11.99).

The sermons at morning services in January 2010 (beginning on the 10th) will give an overview of the Bible’s big story. Look out for further Bible-related events through the year.

Some ideas:

  • Make this the focus of a daily time with God; building your prayers on what you have read.
  • Read or listen to the day’s passages on the train to work.
  • As a family read the NT passage together each day
  • As a home group find a Bible overview study (for example St. Matthias Press’ Full of Promise – an OT overview) to support your personal reading.
  • When you meet as a home group discuss what you have been reading since you last met.

If I buy a One Year® Bible, which version should I choose – NIV or NLT?

Both have their strengths. The NIV version is the one we use in church and aims to strike a balance between being easy to read and staying close to the original words. The NLT is a freer translation and therefore perhaps an easier read, especially in large chunks. Why not go for a change and try a version that’s new to you?
